Shrove Tuesday arrives each year with a delicious whoosh of flour and excitement, and at Toddlers Inn we love turning it into a hands‑on cooking adventure. Traditionally in the UK, families made pancakes on this day to use up rich ingredients like eggs, butter, and milk before Lent began. Today, it’s simply a joyful excuse to get mixing, whisking, and flipping with our little chefs.
Our Toddler‑Friendly Pancake Recipe
100g plain flour
2 eggs
300ml milk
A little oil or butter for the pan
Whisk everything together until smooth, warm a lightly oiled pan, pour in a thin layer of batter, cook for a minute, flip, and enjoy with fruit or a drizzle of honey.
Topping Ideas for Little Tummies
Once the pancakes are ready, the real fun begins. Offering a selection of toppings lets children explore flavours and make their own choices.
Fresh fruit like bananas, strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries adds colour and natural sweetness.
Yoghurt, whether plain or fruity, gives a cool, creamy contrast.
Honey or maple syrup can be drizzled lightly for a gentle sweetness (never for children under 1).
Nut butters such as peanut or almond add a tasty protein boost.
Sprinkles bring a burst of colour and excitement.
Cinnamon and sugar offer a warm, comforting classic.
Why Pancake Making Is Perfect for Toddlers
Pancake making is a brilliant all‑round learning experience for young children. It’s a chance to bond with your child, because cooking together encourages teamwork, shared laughter, and taking turns. Children feel proud when they’re included, and these shared moments strengthen emotional connection.
There’s also a surprising amount of early maths hidden in the process. Toddlers can help weigh flour, count spoonfuls, compare pancake sizes, and talk about time while waiting for the batter to cook.
Cooking opens the door to rich conversations. Children can choose toppings, describe textures, talk about colours, and express preferences — all of which support language development and decision‑making.
It’s also a lovely opportunity to invite friends or family to join in. Sharing pancakes helps children practise hospitality, turn‑taking, and social confidence.
Pancake making also supports:
Fine Motor Skills through stirring, pouring, and decorating.
Language Skills as children learn new cooking words and follow simple steps.
Social Skills through teamwork, sharing, and celebrating each other’s creations.
Safety First
We keep hot pans well out of reach, supervise every step, and let children handle only cool, safe utensils. Adults do the flipping while little hands stay busy with mixing and decorating.
