Making Reading and Mark Marking Fun for Children

Engaging children in reading and making marks (drawing or writing) doesn't have to be a chore. In fact, it can be a fun and rewarding experience for both the adult and the child. Here are some creative ways to make reading and making marks enjoyable for children:

1. Create a Storytelling Corner

Designate a special area in your home as a "storytelling corner" where you and your child can sit together and read. Decorate the area with colourful cushions, blankets, and maybe even some fairy lights to make it inviting and cosy.

2. Act Out Stories

Encourage your child to act out their favourite stories with you. You can take turns playing different characters, using props and costumes to bring the story to life. This not only makes reading interactive but also stimulates their imagination.

3. Experiment with Different Materials

Instead of traditional paper and crayons, try using unconventional materials for mark-making, such as chalk on the garden patio, paint on a large canvas, or even creating a storybook using photographs. Mixing things up can make the activity feel fresh and exciting.

4. Hold a Reading Picnic

Take your reading activities outdoors by organizing a reading picnic in your garden or a nearby park. Pack some books, snacks, and a picnic blanket, and spend an afternoon immersed in stories and nature.

5. Incorporate Technology

For tech-savvy kids, consider exploring interactive e-books and educational apps that combine reading with engaging visuals and activities. Just be sure to balance screen time with traditional reading and mark-making experiences.

6. Organise a Family Book Club

Choose a book as a family and set aside time to read a chapter together each day. After reading, share thoughts and ideas about the story, encouraging meaningful discussions and bonding over literature.

7. Introduce Creative Challenges

Set up creative challenges for mark-making, such as encouraging your child to create a new ending to a story they've read or asking them to illustrate a scene from their favourite book. This fosters critical thinking and allows them to engage with the stories on a deeper level.

8. Attend Author Events or Storytelling Sessions

Check local libraries, bookstores, or community centres for author events or storytelling sessions. Exposing your child to live readings and interactions with authors can spark their enthusiasm for reading and mark-making.

9. Make it Social

Arrange playdates where children can take turns reading their favourite stories to each other or collaborate on creating a group artwork. This not only makes the activities more enjoyable but also fosters social skills and teamwork.

Remember, the key to making reading and making marks fun for children is to be creative, flexible, and open to new experiences. By infusing these activities with a sense of joy and adventure, you can develop a lifelong passion for learning and creativity in your child.
