The phrase "school readiness" can sound a little overwhelming, can’t it? But really, everything your child experiences in their early years — all the playing, exploring, and discovering — is quietly preparing them to become confident, independent learners who are excited for the adventures ahead!

At Toddlers Inn, our Pre-School is bursting with fun, curiosity, and learning. We celebrate every child’s individuality and create a space where they feel accepted, valued, and free to be their wonderful, unique selves. Here, children are gently encouraged and supported as they grow into independent little learners, building a whole toolkit of life skills to carry with them on their next big step.

One of the special places where this magic happens is in our beautifully furnished outdoor yurt. It’s here that our Outdoor Learning Manager, Lauren, leads our school readiness sessions. Lauren, who holds a Level 4 qualification in Childcare, brings a real passion for Early Years education, filling every session with creativity, encouragement, and heart.

Books are a big part of our school readiness journey. Children enjoy a rich variety of stories and non-fiction with Lauren, developing their language skills and expanding their imaginations. One of their favourite activities is writing their own books! Children dictate their stories to Lauren, who writes them down, and then they practise their own mark-making with crayons — a wonderful way to build the fine motor skills needed for writing later on. Another firm favourite is sound bingo, where children have lots of fun tuning into sounds and learning phonics skills, all while practising important listening skills.

Inspired by the natural world around us, we also explore early scientific ideas like comparison, prediction, and cause and effect. Whether it’s observing plant and animal life cycles, noticing the changing seasons, or wondering what might happen next during an outdoor investigation, Lauren nurtures each child’s natural sense of curiosity and critical thinking.

Mathematical skills are woven into playful activities too. Children might sort natural materials, explore number patterns with numicon boards, or create beautiful transient art to explore shapes, sizes, and patterns. Through games, hands-on activities, and exploration, they build a strong, joyful foundation in early maths.

And when it’s time to start thinking about that big transition to school, we make sure it feels as smooth and reassuring as possible. Did you know that all pre-school settings in East Sussex share a special Transition Book? Lauren reads the nominated story with the children, sparking conversations about feelings and emotions. We also share ideas for home activities based around the book, so that children have something familiar to connect with during their school settling visits — helping them feel confident and secure as they take those exciting first steps into school life.

At Toddlers Inn, school readiness is about more than ticking off skills — it’s about nurturing happy, capable, and confident children, ready for whatever comes next.
