Six Ways to Help the Oceans!

We all like to help the planet and tit's important to look at thing’s children can do to help our oceans. Whether you live by the coast or miles from the nearest sea, there are many things we can all do to protect our oceans and the animals that call it home.

1. Learn more about the oceans and marine life. The more children learn about the issues facing the world’s oceans and the animals within it, the more they’ll want to help. Read books, search the internet, visit local aquariums and of course head out to the seaside if you able to.

2. Help keep water clean. Talk about what happens to the rubbish and pollutants that find their way into the sea. Even young children can understand a simple explanation of where water goes when it leaves your house.

3. Do a spot of beach combing. Don’t just clean up after yourself when you visit the beach. Bring along a bin bag and clear any litter you find. Remember to recycle the things you find where possible.

4. Don’t interfere with marine life. If you see a marine animal in distress or injured, do not approach, touch, pick up, feed or pour water on it. Instead, keep your distance and call a the RSPCA or local vet.

If you’re exploring a rock pool, don’t disturb any creatures, pull them off the rocks or remove them from the water. And tread carefully — many rocks are covered with live mussels, barnacles or other marine life.

5. Turn the water off at every opportunity. Using too much water is a waste of water and energy. Children can use less by turning off the tap when they brush their teeth and can be encouraged to have less deep baths or shorter showers. Also, remember when watering plants with children to make it clear that they should only use what the plants need and mustn't keep the hose pipe running if at all possible.

6. Use a reusable water bottle. Plastics that end up in the world’s oceans are a real problem for marine animals. Plastics destroy their habitats and can also be ingested, poising the animal. Even though children don’t control the products their parents buy, they can make some small changes to protect marine animals. Families can make a point of using reusable water bottles instead of plastic ones and using non-disposable containers in lunch boxes. Recycle whenever possible – even if it means bringing items home to recycle them there.
